It’s More Than Just A Party When You Get BAKED.
At the 1 year anniversary party of EatDrinkJobs, guests were treated to more than just some of the most delicious desserts known to mankind. Each guest received a signed copy of “BAKED ELEMENTS,” the latest cookbook from Matt Lewis and Renato Poliafito.
Much More Than A Bakery To Me
As I waited for my turn to meet the authors, my memory was jogged. I fondly recalled the last time I was at Baked in Red Hook, Brooklyn.
We had just buried my mother a month earlier, and my father travelled up from Florida for a visit and some laughs with me and Dan. The weather was chilly, so we bundled up and boarded the Red Hook bound IKEA ferry search of pies.
Brownies And A Diet Coke
Sitting in the window seats at Baked, the three of us enjoyed some laughs and fond memories that I will cherish in my heart forever. We noshed on some of Matt and Renato’s sugary treats, Lowell washing his down with a Diet Coke.
All of us were on a tight budget, so even though my father walked with a cane, he valiantly hobbled all around all of Red Hook in lieu of paying for a taxi.
We stopped in at Steve’s for Key Lime Pie, our favorite. I should have known that it would be the last time he would ever see his beloved city of NY, as the chore of surviving without my mom proved too much to bear for my fragile 84 year old father. A short eight months later in July 2009 his broken heart gave out.
We buried him next to his wife of 56 years, Alana Weinerman, the woman he couldn’t live without. His best friend. I will cherish them both for the rest of my life.
This originally started out as a post about EatDrinkJobs but “Baked Elements, somehow it just the “Baked Element”stirred up something different altogether.
I know it’s a sad and tragic love story, and not my usual comedic style, but It’s my blog, and I’ll cry if I want to.
